Mount Vernon Children’s Park Toy Bin

IMG_8282We have recently added a communal toy bin to the park! We’ve added the following items so far:

  • 2 small rubber balls
  • 1 small foam football
  • 3 bottles bubbles
  • 1 twirling baton
  • 1 megaphone
  • 1 jump rope
  • 1 plastic bat and ball
  • 1 foam dart
  • 1 child’s play rake

Please feel free to use any of the toys in this bin, but remember, be a good neighbor and return them here before you leave the park! These toys are for all kids to share!

All communal toys will have “Mount Vernon Children’s Park” or “MVCP” written on them in black permanent marker to help differentiate from toys your kids might bring from home.

Parents—if you find that some little hands have taken any of these toys home, please help us out and return them to the park on your next visit. We also welcome donations of toys to the bin! Anything weather resistant and safe for kids will be welcome! Just write “MVCP” on permanent marker and drop them  off here. Thanks!

November Park Meet-up

This last August, we kickstarted monthly park meet-ups for neighborhood families as a way to get to know one another better and to discuss the future of the Mount Vernon Children’s Park. The first meet-up was very successful, with parents and guardians socializing and kids running around the park and playing. From this, a small committee of neighborhood parents formed and began talking in earnest about improvements and additions that could be made to make our park even more fun! Meet-ups continued for the next few months, falling on the third Friday of each month and starting at 5:30pm.

While we met in the park for August, September, and October’s meet-ups, the weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter (don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour this Sunday!), so we are moving the winter meet-ups to indoor venues. This month’s meet-up will take place at the newly opened Mt. Vernon Marketplace at 520 Park Avenue on Friday, November 20 at 5:30pm until whenever. Come and join us to meet other neighborhood families! And of course, bring the kids! (We’ve contacted the Marketplace, too, to ask about possibly adding a kid-friendly corner where children visiting the market can play or sit, and were told that it was definitely an idea that they would consider based on space considerations–maybe by November 20, there will be one!) The meet-up is casual–just a time and place to hang out. However, if you are interested in sharing your input in the park, finding out about our future goals for the park, or if you want to volunteer, we’ll be discussing those matters, too, and bringing with us a monthly newsletter to share as well as a Playworld Systems playground equipment catalog that you can browse through to see what kind of improvements we might be able to make in the future.

Summer is hot and the Children’s Park Fountain is cool!

The fountain at the Mt. Vernon Children’s Park is on for the summer! Special thanks to Susan Warren and every volunteer who helped to lead the efforts to repair the fountain over the past year and David March of D.G. March & Associates who did great work getting the fountain up and running just in time for warm weather. The fountain is child-activated – just hit the black rubber button on the smaller flower. Please help us keep the fountain running and the park clean by clearing leaf debris or other debris from the fountain drains if they are clogged and discouraging children from any playing with sand by the fountain.

Spring Cleaning with Friends and Neighbors on May 10

We had a great time at our Spring Book Exchange on Sunday – thanks to everyone who volunteered and everyone who joined us!

We’re doing a quick evening cleaning at the park this Friday to clear out some of the weeds, trim the shrubbery, sweep up the leaf debris and clean the sandbox. We’ll do anything we can manage in an hour so stop by for any time that you can (even if it is only 15 minutes) from 6:00pm to 7:00pm on Friday evening.

RSVP on for the Clean-up on Facebook or comment below if you are able to attend!

Update on new projects at the Children’s Park

There are four major projects currently being pursued for the Children’s Park:

  1. Repairing the water play area. Repairs have been made and the spray park should be operational next summer.
  2. Replacement of the tree in the deep tree well. We have requested the removal of the broken tree on the upper level of the park. After it is removed, fill dirt will be added to raise the height of the dirt and a new tree will be planted.
  3. Repairing the wrought iron fence on the lower level. Our request for these repairs was placed in June. Recreation and Parks is handling these repairs. They have a contractor lined up and they tell us they are now “waiting for approval” to spend the funds.
  4. Two grant applications are being filed to fund a new piece of equipment that will suit 2-5 year olds. The hedge maze will be fully removed and this equipment will take its place. New surface covering will be installed under the new equipment.

If you are interested in learning more about these projects, please contact Susan Warren at sbwarren@hotmail.com.
